Honoring Revolutionary War Veteran John McIlduff: A Family Legacy Remembered

Every generation stands on the shoulders of those who came before it. Remembering their sacrifices is one of the greatest ways we can honor both our families and our country’s history.

Recently, the Export Historical Society announced the installation of new grave markers honoring Revolutionary War veteran John McIlduff and his wife, Ann, at the historic Emmanuel Lutheran Church Cemetery in Export, Pennsylvania. A public dedication ceremony will be held on July 13, ensuring their contributions to America’s founding are remembered for generations to come.

For many, John McIlduff is simply another name from the Revolutionary War.

For the Duff family, he is much more.

Scott Duff is a direct descendant of John McIlduff, making this dedication especially meaningful. It serves as a reminder that the freedoms we enjoy today were secured not only by famous generals and battles, but also by ordinary families whose courage, sacrifice, and perseverance helped build a new nation.

A Life on the Pennsylvania Frontier

John McIlduff settled on Pennsylvania’s western frontier during one of the most dangerous periods in American history. In 1782, while the Revolutionary War was drawing to a close, frontier settlements remained vulnerable to attacks. Historical accounts tell how John and Ann McIlduff’s family survived an attack that destroyed their cabin, yet they persevered and rebuilt their lives.

In gratitude for their survival, John later donated land for what became the first Emmanuel Lutheran Church. Today, John and Ann rest in the cemetery beside the church that grew from that generous gift.
