Description

The M1 Garand: Post World War II, Vol. 2 by Scott A. Duff covers September 1945 through June 1957 and includes information on M1 rifles manufactured by Springfield Armory, International Harvester, and Harrington & Richardson.

The M1 Garand: Post World War II is written specifically for the Garand collector. Examined are the post-World War II rebuild program at Springfield Armory, Korean War production, and continuing development. Manufacture of M1s by Springfield, International Harvester, and Harrington & Richardson are chronicled in Data Sheets and photographs detailing original rifles made by all three manufacturers.

The variations of components are described and their period of use given. The collector is aided in identification of parts changes by detailed photographs and explanations. These descriptions used in conjunction with the Data Sheets allow the collector to verify original rifles or restore their M1 to correct configuration.

Springfield Armory is discussed in greater depth as there have been more records preserved by this government installation than by either of the two private concerns.

This volume is divided into two sections; Chapters 1 through 5 are a historical narrative of the various activities and facilities of Springfield Armory. This section is based on a thorough study of the Armory’s semi-annual reports and other pertinent Armory documents. A careful reading of these five chapters is necessary in order to fully understand the M1 rifle. A complete study of this rifle is not possible without an understanding of the Armory as a whole. The two subjects cannot be separated

Chapters 6 through 8 are for the collectors use in determining various aspects and specific details about his rifle. Chapter 6 provides specific information regarding each manufacturer, and barrel dates tied to serial numbers. Explained in Chapter 7 are the variations and descriptions of the individual parts which make up an M1 rifle. And Chapter 8 furnishes data sheets with exact information on specific rifles which will allow the collector to identify a correct rifle or assist in a restoration project.

The closing chapter, Chapter 9, provides a view of the Armory and its interrelationship with the city of Springfield, Massachusetts. The effect of the closing of the Armory and the aftermath are examined.
